Living wisdom

Food, rest, the body, and the rules of daily life.

Scripture spends a remarkable amount of space on utterly ordinary things: what to eat, when to stop working, how to keep a camp clean. These passages are usually skipped, yet they carry a whole view of health in which the body is never an afterthought to the spiritual life.

A word on how to read this. What follows is offered as wisdom, not as a new code. The New Testament is explicit that food itself does not make anyone cleaner before God; any reading that turns diet into an instrument of condemnation has already lost the thread.

The First Diet: Seed and Fruit The First Diet: Seed and Fruit

The first menu in Scripture is seed-bearing plants and the fruit of trees. Meat is explicitly permitted only after the flood, and with one restriction attached: not with its blood. This is not modern nutrition science. It is a direction — eating is framed from the beginning as grateful reception, not unlimited consumption.

God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.

Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green herb, I have given everything to you. But flesh with its life, that is, its blood, you shall not eat.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life.

Clean and Unclean: A Practice of Distinction Clean and Unclean: A Practice of Distinction

The dietary code of Leviticus 11 is not primarily hygiene — it is distinction. Every meal required a choice, so that Israel would remember whose they were. The New Testament states plainly that food itself neither cleanses nor defiles; Acts and Mark both record the turn. The honest posture today: receive the wisdom of restraint without turning it into a new instrument of condemnation.

“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. Whatever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud among the animals, that you may eat.

There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.

A voice came to him, “Rise, Peter, kill and eat!” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” A voice came to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean.”

Let no one therefore judge you in eating, or in drinking, or with respect to a feast day or a new moon or a Sabbath day, which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body is Christ’s.

For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

One man has faith to eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Don’t let him who eats despise him who doesn’t eat. Don’t let him who doesn’t eat judge him who eats, for God has accepted him.

Daniel’s Ten Days: A Testable Restraint Daniel’s Ten Days: A Testable Restraint

Daniel proposes a ten-day trial to the steward: pulse to eat and water to drink, then compare. It is one of the rare passages in Scripture that says, in effect, test me. What it offers is not a recipe but a posture — restraint can be examined, and should be.

“Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink. Then let our faces be examined before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king’s dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.” So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. At the end of ten days, their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king’s dainties.

Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

Have you found honey? Eat as much as is sufficient for you, lest you eat too much, and vomit it.

Sabbath: Rest Written Into Law Sabbath: Rest Written Into Law

The one commandment about time tells you to stop. Even the land was given a sabbath year. In a culture that treats exhaustion as virtue, sabbath is a spiritual protest: your worth is not your output. Rest is not the enemy of efficiency but an act of faith — that the world holds together while you are still.

當記念安息日,守為聖日。 六日要勞碌做你一切的工, 但第七日是向耶和華 ─ 你神當守的安息日。這一日你和你的兒女、僕婢、牲畜,並你城裡寄居的客旅,無論何工都不可做;

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;

You shall sow your field six years, and you shall prune your vineyard six years, and gather in its fruits; but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to Yahweh. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

“For six years you shall sow your land, and shall gather in its increase, but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the animal of the field shall eat. In the same way, you shall deal with your vineyard and with your olive grove.

He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

The Body as Temple: Ordinary Worship The Body as Temple: Ordinary Worship

Paul calls the body a temple of the Holy Spirit, and names eating and drinking as sites of worship. That redefines health: sleep, food, and movement are not secular chores but spiritual stewardship. How you treat your body is how you treat something entrusted to you.

Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.

but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

Mind and Body: Scripture’s Psychosomatics Mind and Body: Scripture’s Psychosomatics

Proverbs repeatedly ties emotion to the body: a merry heart does good like medicine, a broken spirit dries the bones, envy is rottenness in them. It anticipates psychosomatic medicine by millennia. Healing, then, is never only physical — forgiveness, gratitude, and the release of bitterness carry bodily weight.

A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

The life of the body is a heart at peace, but envy rots the bones.

The light of the eyes rejoices the heart. Good news gives health to the bones.

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. Selah.

Rules for the Camp: Underrated Public Health Rules for the Camp: Underrated Public Health

Deuteronomy records a strikingly ordinary command: relieve yourself outside the camp, and cover it. Leviticus prescribes isolation for the infectious, washing of clothes, handling of vessels. These provisions have saved lives across the history of plague. They remind us that spiritual life never despises the concrete order of the body.

You shall have a place also outside of the camp where you go relieve yourself. You shall have a trowel among your weapons. It shall be, when you relieve yourself, you shall dig with it, and shall turn back and cover your excrement;

“‘When he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes; and he shall bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.

The clean person shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day. On the seventh day, he shall purify him. He shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at evening.

Eat With Gladness: Not Asceticism Eat With Gladness: Not Asceticism

Scripture’s view of food is not ascetic. Ecclesiastes tells you to eat your bread with joy; the feasts themselves were commanded celebrations. Restraint and gladness are not opposites — real freedom is being able both to enjoy and to stop.

Go your way—eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works.

I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice, and to do good as long as they live. Also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God.

Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart,

He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth: wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man’s heart.
